Lindsay,
I have just started on my dissertation and was thrilled to find your blog. I appreciated reading through your thoughts and questions. It helped me with my own. I am struggling with a lot of the language in the books I am wading through and find it takes a lot of my time to work out what some of it means, let alone reviewing it! Good luck with your work. I just read two words in one of the books I am using in my literature review - Persistence and determination - I think they are needed in big doses for this work!!

Extremely interesting post. I tutor with the OU and we tend to use forums rather than blogs, but much of what you say has resonance. One of the courses I teach has a satisfactory participation requirement (you can't meet the learning outcomes by not participating), but there are students who still feel uncomfortable about 'exposing' themselves online and try to get away with the least posting they can do. It's not so easy to communicating learning online, communication mishaps aside, (reading body language is not an option) there is a sense of commitment to anything they type and leave on a forum... It's there for all your peers to see and it takes guts to leave it there. (Although I recognise that speaking up in a classroom is also difficult and there is a certain anonymonity in online discussion). Probably why making it a safe environment is a big part of the job and shouldn't be dismissed over the demands of learning content!
